Zoosk vs. OkCupid: The Battle of The Big

by Roxana Bikfalvi

At A Glance

Zoosk is one of the most popular dating sites despite being a rather new addition to the online dating scene. It was launched in December 2007 and is now available in 80 countries and 25 languages. The website caters to singles looking for long-term relationships and marriage. With members spanned all over the world, it is an excellent choice for people looking for local or international romance.

OkCupid is a tad older than Zoosk and also a tad more popular. Not only it’s available in 100 countries, and it comes free. Yeah, you heard that right! You won’t have to pay to be in there nor pay for messaging other members. A nice thing, especially for younger singles on a budget. This free thing attracts younger members; thus, the site is more suitable for those looking for casual dating rather than a serious relationship.

How to Choose a Dating Site

While Zoosk and OkCupid seem to cater to different audiences, the truth is that you can find whatever you’re looking for on both platforms.

The choice, therefore, reduces to your personality and will to fill in questionnaires.

Zoosk has an easy sign-up system, but you’ll have to fill in your profile and answer a few questions before you’re ready to roll.

OkCupid also has a sort of questionnaire, to begin with, but it’s less complex than Zoosk’s. So, if you’d like a speedier process, OkCupid could be a better choice.

Because one is a free site and the other is a paid membership one, you should also decide what online dating route you’d like to go.

For long-term romance and marriage, Zoosk tends to be a better choice. OkCupid is more suitable for casual dating.

The differences between the two could go on and on, that’s why I decided to bring both sites in this head-to-head competition.

Check out each platform’s pros and cons below, so you can pick the right one for you.

Availability

Two platforms enjoying truly huge popularity, Zoosk and OkCupid are available worldwide. Each is good for international dating as well as finding romance near you, but there could be some limitations.

Zoosk is currently available in 80 countries and 25 languages. It caters to singles looking for long-term relationships and counts thousands of daily visits. You can use the search function to browse members from anywhere in the world.

OkCupid is available in more countries than Zoosk, but due to its casual dating-centered nature, you won’t really be able to browse people from all over the world. You’ll typically be asked to choose your country during sign-up, and the system will let you browse people in your area.

This is quite limiting if you want to expand your horizons. However, OkCupid is still available in more countries; thus, it wins this round.

Popularity

There are many examples of dating sites available in fewer geographical areas, but that are highly popular. Nevertheless, when it comes to Zoosk and OkCupid, the numbers are those we’d expect with no surprises.

OkCupid is available in more countries, and it’s more popular than Zoosk. True, the comparison is a bit unfair.

One if a free dating site, while the other is a paid one. However, members on both sites are genuine. To test OkCupid’s reliability, I went so far as to create a fake profile. And you know what? It took the system a whopping 10 minutes to figure it out and block it.

With this in mind, it’s safe to believe that most profiles on both platforms are real. It doesn’t matter what the members are searching for. The point is that they are both popular, and you’ll always find someone online eager to talk to you.

OkCupid wins, well… because it does receive four times more visits than Zoosk on a monthly basis.

Sign-up Process

Signing up to either Zoosk or OkCupid is free and straightforward. Due to the different nature of the websites, Zoosk has a thorough process that walks you through likes and dislikes. The idea behind the system is that of helping you find the right match.

Signing up to OkCupid is even easier. You’ll have to answer some preference questions, but they are two-choice answers, making things simple.

You can fill in a profile, but it’s not mandatory. Once you’re up and running, you can start contacting whoever you want, receive messages, and chat with all members. Undeniably, signing up to OkCupid is faster.

Features

Zoosk is full of features, just what you’d expect from a paid dating site. Perhaps the most praised one is the behavioral matching that finds you compatible members based on the answers you gave during the sign-up process and your browsing pattern.

Browsing and winking to members is free, but you’ll have to pay if you want to read or send messages.

In-app games and activities increase your chances of finding a compatible member, and you can also access the blog or community sections if you have any doubts or concerns.

OkCupid is not as feature-packed as Zoosk, but it has all you need to find compatible matches. You can play a hot-or-not kind of game or browse through profiles. The platform lets you set various search parameters, and you can choose whether you want to find members looking for friendship, hookups, casual dating, or long-term.

Because the site is majorly centered on casual dating, I found that setting long-term romance tends to put off some users. Nevertheless, you can still expect to find many compatible matches here.

That said and turning to our head-to-head comparison, Zoosk has more features than OkCupid and wins this round.

Quality of Matches

Zoosk is also ahead of things when it comes to the qualities of matches. That happens mostly because it’s a paid site. Those who’re not serious about dating, therefore, are more likely to use OkCupid, which is free.

This doesn’t mean that OkCupid has poorer quality members. It just means that it’s harder to find someone interested in long-term romance or marriage on that site.

At the end of the day, both sites have real members with whom to interact. However, if you want to find a potential partner fast, you should choose Zoosk.

Aesthetics and Interface

When it comes to aesthetics and interface, both websites are really easy to use and have clean, functional interfaces.

Neither app stands out, though. The design of each interface is rather basic. This makes it easy to use for most users but lets a bit to be desired if you’re accustomed to the 21st-century web design.

In both cases, the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” apply. They’re not outstanding from a visual point of view but are outstanding in terms of functionality. That’s why we’ll call it a tie.

Pricing

It is quite easy to understand that a free price will always win on pricing. That’s why I decided to compare OkCupid’s premium membership.

This paid membership gives you access to a variety of perks, such as browsing in incognito mode or seeing who has viewed your profile.

Even with these extra perks, OkCupid is still cheaper than Zoosk. The lower price makes sense, as the website caters to a younger and less wealthy audience.

If you decide to buy a six-month subscription, OkCupid will cost you under $10, while Zoosk comes at $12.50.

Paying on a monthly basis comes with a bigger gap. OkCupid costs $19.95 a month, whereas Zoosk is $10.04 more.

Who Is It For?

Both Zoosk and OkCupid cater to people of all ages and sexual orientations. However, OkCupid makes it more straightforward and lets you choose from a wider variety of options.

Indeed, the website doesn’t have just the typical men/women categorization. If you identify yourself as queer or asexual, you can simply choose from the list. Undeniably, OkCupid wins.

And The Winner Is…

OkCupid. The website caters to a wider variety of people and, even if it’s a bit harder to find the perfect match, it’s still responsible for forming long-term relationships. Some couples who met on OkCupid also got married, so you can still find the love of your life through this site.

It is free to use, and it has fun graphics and an easy sign-up process. Zoosk is ideal for a more mature audience, especially singles interested in long-term relationships and marriage. Members here tend to be more serious about what they want and take things slower.

What’s the best, in the end, is down to you.

So, would you prefer Zoosk or OkCupid? Why? Have you tried any other dating sites?
